What to Wear for Your Engagement Shoot
If there's one question we get asked more than any other before a shoot, it's this one. And honestly, we love that couples ask, because what you wear really does matter, not in a stressful way, but in a this will make your photos feel like you way.
So here's everything we'd tell you over coffee if you asked us in person.
Start With How You Want to Feel
Before you think about colours or silhouettes, think about feeling. Do you want your photos to feel light and dreamy? Romantic and timeless? Relaxed and natural?
Your outfit is one of the most powerful tools for setting that tone. If you want photos that feel ethereal and soft, the kind that look like they belong in a film, then lighter softer pieces tend to do that work beautifully. Whites, creams, warm neutrals and earthy tones all photograph in a way that feels romantic without trying too hard.
That doesn't mean you have to wear white. It just means the colours you choose will shape the mood of your entire gallery.
Our Honest Advice on Colour
We always suggest steering toward softer, more muted tones. Neutrals, creams, dusty pinks, warm whites, sandy beiges - these tend to sit beautifully in natural light and let you become the focal point rather than what you're wearing.
What we'd gently steer away from: very saturated or bold colours. A bright red dress or a vivid cobalt suit will draw the eye straight to the clothing, which can work against the mood you're trying to create. The goal is for people to look at your photos and see you rather than your outfit.
Avoid busy patterns or large logos for the same reason. Subtle texture is lovely. A loud print can be distracting.
Movement Makes Magic
One thing that transforms photos more than almost anything else? Fabric that moves.
If you're wearing a dress, we almost always suggest something long and flowy. The way fabric catches the breeze, trails behind you or wraps around as you turn creates a quality in photos that no amount of posing can replicate. It adds life. It adds romance. It makes still images feel like they're still moving.
This is just a suggestion, not a rule. Wear what feels comfortable and like you. But if you're on the fence between two outfits, the one with more movement will almost always give you more to work with.
Should You Do Multiple Looks?
Entirely up to you. Some couples love the idea of changing outfits partway through, which gives the gallery more variety and can let you show two different sides of yourselves. Others prefer to stay in one look and just be present in the moment without the logistics of a change.
We don't push either way. If you're considering it, think about whether a second look would feel fun or stressful. If it sounds fun, bring it. If it sounds like one more thing to organise, keep it simple.
A Few Practical Things Worth Knowing
Comfort matters more than you think. If you're self-conscious or uncomfortable in what you're wearing, it will show. The best outfit is one you feel genuinely good in.
Think about your shoes early. If you're wearing heels, make sure you can actually walk in them, as we often find ourselves on grass, sand or uneven ground. Flat sandals, white sneakers or going barefoot can all be just as beautiful and significantly more comfortable.
Coordinate, don't match. You don't need to wear identical colours or be perfectly coordinated, but it helps if your outfits feel like they belong in the same world. Think about tone and feel rather than trying to match exactly.
Avoid anything brand new on the day. Wear your outfit around the house first. New clothes can feel stiff or unfamiliar and that translates in photos.
Bring a steamer or iron. Especially for flowy dresses. Creases that look minor in real life tend to show up clearly in photos.
When You're Just Not Sure
Send us a photo. Genuinely, we love being asked. Before every shoot we're happy to look at what you're thinking of wearing and give you an honest opinion. It's one of the easiest ways to feel more confident walking into the day.
Your engagement shoot should feel exciting, not stressful. Getting the outfit sorted early is one less thing to think about and it means when the day comes, you can just show up and enjoy it.
