The Forecast Says Rain. Here's What We Do.
There's a moment every couple dreads, opening the weather app a few days before their shoot and seeing that little rain cloud sitting over their date.
We've been there with our couples more times than we can count. And every single time, it's turned into something we wouldn't trade.
We Check In Early and Honestly
As soon as the forecast starts suggesting rain, usually around the two week mark or whenever the weather app gives us something reliable to work with, we reach out. We'd rather have the conversation early than leave anyone anxious.
We show our couples real examples of rainy shoots. Some from our own portfolio, some from photographers we admire. We want them to see the mood, the texture, the drama that overcast skies and wet streets can create. Images that most photographers simply never get the chance to make.
Most couples lean toward sunshine, as most people would. But once they see what rain can look like through a lens, a lot of them start to come around.
If rescheduling makes more sense, we'll always say so. But if they're open to it, we're more than ready.
Our Very First Shoot Was in the Rain
May. A pre-wedding shoot. We asked our couple to pick up a couple of clear umbrellas and meet us on location.
We were all meeting for the first time. It was cold, it was dull and honestly we were a little nervous. There's something about harsh conditions that strips away any pretence and forces everyone to just be present. We bonded quickly. We laughed. We got a little wet.
And then towards the end of the shoot, it cleared.
Those photos, puddle reflections, the two of them running through the rain, slow shutter blur of droplets catching the light, were unlike anything a perfect sunny afternoon could have given us. That couple came back and booked us again for a second shoot at a completely different location.
That first rainy shoot taught us everything we needed to know about embracing the unexpected.
What We Actually Do When It Rains
We don't fight the weather. We work with it.
Rain brings mood. It brings reflections in puddles, soft diffused light and a cinematic quality that's almost impossible to replicate on a bright day. We lean into all of it. Umbrellas become part of the composition, wet pavement becomes a mirror and movement becomes something beautiful rather than something to avoid.
The goal is always the same: make sure our couples are comfortable, make sure everyone's having fun and let the environment do what it does.
Some of our favourite images have come from days that started with a grey sky and a nervous couple. By the end, they never wanted to go home.
What We'd Say to You
If you're staring at a rain forecast right now, don't panic.
Reach out to us. We'll look at it together, talk through your options and if you're open to it, we'll show you what's possible. Autumn and winter in Sydney bring some of the most beautiful moody light we ever shoot in.
The couples who say yes to the rain almost always tell us it was their favourite part of the whole experience.
Based in Sydney, shooting year round, whatever the weather.
